Written by John Boyne, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas tells the story of Bruno, a German boy whose father holds a position of authority in the army during WWII. Bruno's youthful and incomplete understanding of the events of the war underline, imo, the utter stupidity of war; the ignorance and arrogance that causes any group of people to believe themselves superior to any other group. There were many moments while reading the book where I physically cringed because of the behaviour of some of the characters. The ending is a tragic lesson to those who believe in absolute power. It's a very simply written book and would probably be suitable for older primary school aged children. www.theage.com.au/news/book-reviews/the-boy-in-the-striped-pyjamas/2006/01/03/1136050420787.htmlElisa
