The dietitian we go to occasionally has written a book. It's called "Eat for Your Life" by Lisa Middleton and Daniel Hoy.
It is ordered in sections, and in the section entitled "Menopause", she lists the 10 best and worst foods for women who are in their late 40's and early 50's. By top ten best, she means those with nutrients crucial to the health of women in that age group.
Top 10 Best Foods for women in their 40's - 50's
Sardines
Milk (One thing she mentions is that a glass of milk before bed can help with sleep. She also recommends 4 serves of dairy a day.)
Yoghurt
Oats
Potatoes
Almonds (Keep serving size to a handful a day. Not salted!)
Legumes (including baked beans)
Raspberries
10 Beware Foods
Shortbread biscuits
Pork crackling
Butter
Fried fish
Chocolate (where is a weeping smiley??) - she says not to avoid it completely, but to treat yourself less often. "Buy the best quality dark chocolate you can find and stick to a couple of squares only. Make it special, sit down and enjoy each piece."
Carrot cake (high in fat)
Diet soft drinks
Spicy foods (if experiencing hot flushes)
Alcohol (again, hot flushes)
Salt

Interesting list, Elisa. (all except the chocolate thing, of course ;D) I do avoid most of those things on the avoid list and have quite a few things on the best list. Just switch the sardines with the chocolate....and everything will be good. ;D

I still haven't managed to eat sardines. My mother loves them so I grew up around people who ate them, but oh, yuk, they don't appeal to me at all. Kind of a nice change that most of the items on that list are inexpensive. With butter on the beware list, I suppose that means oatmeal cookies don't count as a health food. ;D Elisa

That's about the only thing on the list that would cause me trouble (well...and the chocolate thing....still trying to come to terms with that one! ;D )

I was joking around with my friend on fb about sardines. He is taking his Mum to a concert at Moomba. Her grandsons are one of the acts booked by Moomba. She is old so he was saying she is packing sandwiches and for a joke he said sardines and things like that. Something smelly I guess lol.
I was saying I had plain label sardines the other day. They have been getting bigger and bigger, and I got a huge scale. I wasn't impressed.
The normal ones though I'd eat any day. Though fresh sardines crumbed are a real treat for me. They are Italian and fried, I tried everything in my Australian Woman's Weekly cookbooks in the 80s. My dh said he saw some sardines, apparently there is a fish stall near the school, no one told me they looked and didn't buy sardines!!!!!
I eat heaps of legumes, not so much milk, though we do like cheese and things like that so maybe we do consume a bit of it when we can. Had Janella Pursell's cheese free nachos the other day, wow, they were good. Will post.
Eat heaps of spuds, and raspberries because of the bushes, usually a smoothy, but not lately.
Yeah, basing it on the fact my calcium levels are good.
