Ok, you may be aware that I have sensitive skin (I've mentioned it often enough ) and that I have an under employed dh.
I've been steadily working my way through a bunch of different skin and hair products, partly because I'm aging and partly because I want to reduce both the cost of "beauty" upkeep, and the chemicals on my skin, because it is so sensitive.
I developed an ongoing problem on my face about 5 years or so ago which left me looking almost pimply, and with horrible, itchy rough patches on my face, which covered most of my cheeks. Hideous. It's called peri-oral dermatitis.
They've no clear idea what it is or what causes it. There is an antibiotic that clears it up, and which I took for a while until my eyes cleared (they get red and sore when this problem flares up).
I found that using eldest ds' Mario Badescu Healing Cream fixed it, and kept it under control. However, I wanted to see if there was a cheaper alternative.
I'd bought plain organic rosehip oil for dd to use on a couple of stretch marks. Reading about the stuff on some large forums, it seemed a lot of people used it on their faces and found it terrific.
Then a neighbour mentioned that her naturopath told her to use it on her face. My neighbour's skin looked somehow....healthy in the way that a child's skin is healthy.
I decided to try it. Twice a day, I washed my face with my customary Cetaphil gentle skin wash (recommended by the dermatologist, we all use it), left my skin just a little damp and then massaged 3 or 4 drops of rosehip oil into my face and neck.
The first day it felt fine, but then for a few days my skin felt irritated and I had to use Healing Cream to calm my cheeks.
To get to the point, after persisting for about 3 weeks, my skin feels GREAT. It's soft, smooth, no redness, roughness or oily spots, pimples .... nothing.
I do not, sadly, look ten years younger, but my skin does look calm and healthy and I will continue to use this stuff forever, if this keeps up.
During the day I use a sunscreen over the top if I'll be outside for any length of time.
The blurb on the box says that rosehip oil is "re-balancing" and though I thought "as if", it seems to have been for me.
Over here it costs around $20 for a 15 or 20 ml bottle, but you literally would not use more than 8 drops a day so it will last for months. They come with a glass dropper.
So there you have it, my recommendation for a simple, organic, single ingredient beauty treatment: rosehip oil.
